“Daniel Majano, program manager of the Electrical Safety Foundation (ESF), recommends that homeowners “purchase smoke alarms from a reputable retailer that you trust which have been tested and approved by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.”

After ensuring the device is certified, you’ll want to consider whether you want a wired or battery-operated model, where you’ll place the detector, and what additional features you’ll need. ”Many manufacturers produce battery-operated alarms interconnected by wireless technology and those that contain a special smoke alarm with strobe lights, or pillow and bed shakers for those who are deaf or hard of hearing,” Majano says.”
