Downed power lines can be deadly. Always assume a downed power line is live and avoid approaching them or anything near them.

Use Precaution:

  1. Downed power lines can energize the ground up to 35 feet away. Even more in wet conditions.
  2. If you see a downed power line, call 911
  3. Never drive over a downed power line or anything in contact with them.
  4. Never try to move a downed power line.

Power Line Contact:

  1. If a vehicle contacts a power line or utility pole, stay away and call 911.
  2. Consider all lines to be live and dangerous.
  3. Stay in place or inside your vehicle unless you see smoke or fire.
  4. Warn others to stay at least 35 feet away.
  5. Tell others not to approach the vehicle, downed lines, or anything that may be in contact with the downed lines.
  6. Call 911.

In the Event of Fire or Smoke:

  1. Do not touch the ground and the vehicle at the same time.
  2. Jump from the vehicle with your feet together.
  3. Shuffle at least 50-70 feet, or about 6 truck lengths, and avoid lifting your feet.
